Relief Prints

Woodcuts and Lino prints are a form of relief print. A relief print means that the area of the block that is printed is in relief, i.e. it is raised up on the block. This is opposite to to the printing process for an etching.
For a black and white print the areas cut away on the block are the white areas or the negative space around the drawing. The printed image will be the opposite way round to the image on the block. So if you have a specific composition in mind you have to remember to reverse it on the block. Once you get into multi block prints the technique is exactly the same, just requires a bit more thought and ensuring that each block lines up relative to the other blocks to create the final image.
