December 9th Mountain Hares
Mountain Hare studies. pencil/watercolour A2
Mountain hares are common in the hills of Shetland and during the winter are relatively easy to see as their coats turn white. Getting close enough to draw them is a not so easy as they are fairly wary, and they usually sit in the lee of the wind, so in order to view them you have to be exposed to the elements. This drawing is three studies of the same individual sketched over the period of an hour in the late afternoon.Just it's head showing. Still quite a lot of brown on the head of this animal I would have stayed longer but it was very cold, my fingers were getting numb and it started to rain.
