Woodcuts and Lino prints are a form of relief print. A relief print means that the area of the block that is printed is in relief, i.e. it is raised up on the block.
For a black and white print the areas cut away on the block are the white areas or the negative space around the drawing. The printed image will be the opposite way round to the image on the block. So if you have a specific composition in mind you have to remember to reverse it on the block. For multiple block and colour prints it requires a bit more time and thought, cutting separate blocks for the respective colours and ensuring that each block lines up relative to the other blocks (registration) to create the final image.
